It was an easy, nice walk around one of the islands. After the boardwalk trail, we also hiked the short (half mile) Island Trail Loop. I would be willing to bet you'd see a lot more people fishing if you went in the morning hours. We visited in the afternoon and there were people fishing from the bridge. The falls are really pretty and definitely worth the short walk to view them. Our favorite view was on the right near the beginning of the trail, but there's also a nice view from the bridge, as well as at the end of the trail (designated viewing area). There is a short (less than 1/4 mile), easy, well-maintained boardwalk trail with several views of the falls.
(If you plan to visit historic Hinton, though, you will be very close) The falls themselves are about 20-25 minutes away from the visitor center, sort of off the beaten path unless you are specifically going to see them. I feel they must have meant width-wise, as they didn't seem particularly tall to me. I highly recommend it to my fellow travelers.Īt the visitor center, they told us Sandstone Falls is the largest waterfall in the New River. I liked this view of the falls the best and was glad I made the drive to see it. Please be careful as the path can be difficult going depending on what you choose. If you or your party are up to it, you may like to go through the forest (south) to get a better view of the falls or to the north along a trail through the forest. There are also some trails that lead off the boardwalk and through the forest. There is a very nice boardwalk that leads the visitor to some very nice views of the falls and the river. There is a nice parking lot containing about 40 spaces and a rest area at the falls. There are many sites along this side of the river like rapids and a rest area but the best part is the Sandstone falls at the end.
To actually see the falls you have to drive down to the river get on WV 20, go south through Hinton and then drive back up WV26 (New River Road). You could see it from the Overlook across the river on the East side but the view from there is from a long way away. This is one of the top ones for the entire park.
